What Every Medical Practitioner Should Know Before Performing VA Disability Exams.

Performing Veterans Affairs disability examinations can be a flexible, meaningful way for Medical Practitioners to serve Veterans while expanding their professional experience and earning additional income.

However, these examinations are different from traditional patient-care visits. They require careful preparation, objective clinical evaluation, detailed documentation, and timely completion. Sentinel Health Services provides onboarding support, ongoing guidance, and one-on-one training upon request to help our providers succeed.

Understanding Your Role.

• VA disability examinations are one-time, non-treatment evaluations. You are not establishing an ongoing provider-patient relationship, prescribing medication, or developing a treatment plan.

• Depending on the examination request, you may be expected to:

             Review the Veteran’s medical and military records.

• Confirm or establish a diagnosis when supported by the evidence.

• Complete the appropriate Disability Benefits Questionnaire (DBQ).

• Provide a medical opinion and supporting rationale when requested.

• Order or review required diagnostic testing when authorized.

• Submit an accurate and complete report within the required timeframe.

• Respond promptly to quality-assurance questions or requests for clarification.

What Is Expected During the Examination.

  Medical Providers are expected to:

• Review the available records before the appointment.

• Address every condition and question included in the examination request.

• Perform all required physical examinations and measurements.

• Document both positive and negative clinical findings.

• Evaluate functional loss, including limitations during repeated use and flare-ups when applicable.

• Reconcile conflicting medical information when possible.

• Complete and submit all required documentation promptly.

​​Record Review and Documentation.

   Providers must allow time to:

• Review potentially extensive medical records.

• Prepare for each claimed condition.

• Conduct the examination.

• Complete all DBQs and medical opinions.

• Review the report for consistency and accuracy.

• Make corrections if additional clarification is requested.

• Every statement can affect the Veteran’s claim.

• Documentation must be complete, objective, internally consistent, and based on the available evidence.​
